For this project I created a butterfly mask. I wanted the mask to have a magical forest/ fairy theme but with a darker twist, so I used a solid black disposable surgical mask as the base for my piece. I then created over 50 butterflies by cutting them out of a clear blue solo cup. I used many different sized butterflies throughout the mask. To create the details on the wings, I used a black sharpie. I was inspired by blue monarch butterflies and drew the details accordingly. I then covered the entirety of the mask with the butterflies. At first, I was planning on leaving the mask like that, however, when wearing the mask, it just looked like a blob of butterflies so I added more to change the shape. I placed more butterflies at the bottom center of the mask to create a v shape. I also added more butterflies to the sides of the mask that go up towards the eye area.
I made my piece cohesive by using symmetry throughout. If you fold the mask in half, both sides look almost identical. In addition, when sketching my design, I opted for identical looking butterflies instead of making many different kinds/ using different colors. I think I was successful in creating a wearable mask that has a magical forest/ fairy theme with a dark twist. The dark colors make the mask have a mysterious and evil feel. It looks like something an evil fairy or queen in a fairytale would wear. I like the way my mask turned out, but I don't think its completely perfect. Because I used a black mask as the base of my mask, the blue of the butterfly wings didn't show up very well. I wish that the blue color was more visible, but I think the lack of color helps create a darker mood which I like. When I finished my piece and was taking photos, I noticed that you could see a lot more of the mask underneath when you were wearing the piece. I was disappointed because I wanted the mask underneath to be hidden, but it was difficult to position the butterflies in the right places. Overall, I still think my piece was successful even though it didn't turn out exactly how I had planned. For this project I created a landscape piece with snowy mountains, a blue sky, clouds, and the sun. The most difficult part of this project was making my piece more detailed. It's difficult to position each clothing item perfectly. It amazes me that some artists can create t-shirt art that looks so realistic when it was difficult for me to make some mountains out of my clothes. In addition, I usually wear baggy t-shirts and sweatshirt, so it was hard to find smaller clothing items that I could use for some of the smaller sections. I also realized just how much space is needed for t-shirt art. Because most of my clothes were larger, if I wanted to create a lot of detail I would have needed more space. My bedroom floor isn't very large so that was another issue I ran into. I chose to create a picture of snowy mountains because I tend to wear a lot of grey and blue. I originally wanted to do something with flowers or attempt to recreate a famous art piece, but I quickly realized that I didn't have a lot of bright colored clothes in my closet. Grey mountains with a blue sky in the background was the first idea that popped into my head after I saw how many blue and grey clothes I own.
